Hazard forecasts

Hazard events are characterized by magnitude, duration, location and timing. Calculating their probability of occurrence in terms of these characteristics is the key in understanding fully the hazard component of disaster impacts.

The ANYWHERE project provides forecast for floods, forest fires, droughts, heatwaves, convective storms, severe winds, storm surges or snowfall (among other hazards) over a territory. This is done by means of a variety of hazard modelling tools and algorithms, which currently have improved remarkably their accuracy and precision.

A leap further is needed to determine the real impact of hazards. Therefore, by combining the hazard forecast with the population exposure and terrain vulnerability data, the impact forecasting of the corresponding hazard is automatically obtained.

How are hazard forecasts made:

  • Using algorithms and impact forecasting products that operate 24/7 in a Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MH-EWS) able to provide with the forecast for a variety of weather-induced hazards for any specific time and place in Europe.

  • Such variety of hazard modelling tools and algorithms are included in the ANYWHERE Catalogue as a result of more than ten years of development.
